In August 2024, Whitefield Foundation, in collaboration with Alliance for Youth Nigeria, successfully completed the third edition of its All4Youth Vocational Skill Training program. This initiative, held from August 12th to August 16th in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was designed to equip unemployed youth with practical skills in high-demand areas such as Beauty & Massage, Graphics Design & Social Media Management, Solar Panel Installation, and Web Design & Digital Marketing.
A Strategic Response to Youth Unemployment
The All4Youth Vocational Skill Training program is part of Whitefield Foundation’s broader mission to empower 1 million Nigerians by 2025. This edition specifically targeted the youth in Abeokuta, with the goal of providing them with skills that can lead to self-employment and financial independence. Despite the short notice and challenges posed by nationwide protests, the foundation’s proactive approach ensured that the program was a resounding success.
Overwhelming Response and Participation
Registration for the program was open for just four days, from August 6th to August 10th, 2024. Despite the brief registration period, the initiative garnered significant attention, receiving 1,072 applications. This overwhelming response was driven by a comprehensive publicity campaign that leveraged social media platforms, community networks, and even radio jingles to reach the target audience.
Out of the 1,072 applicants, 575 were selected for the training, and ultimately, 406 participants completed the program. The training, which was held at St. John Private College in Abeokuta, featured a hands-on, practical approach, with participants engaging in real-world projects and assignments that solidified their learning.
Skill Areas and Training Outcomes
Participants were divided across four skill areas:
– Graphics Design & Social Media Management: Beneficiaries learned the fundamentals of graphic design and the strategic use of social media for business.
– Beauty & Massage: This class covered fundamental techniques in skincare, makeup, massage, and Gele-Tying, providing participants with the skills needed to start their own beauty services.
– Solar Panel Installation: Participants gained foundational knowledge in solar energy, including installation techniques and the business aspects of renewable energy.
– Web Design & Digital Marketing: This class offered training in web development, from domain registration to building websites using HTML and CSS, along with an introduction to digital marketing strategies.
Of the 406 participants, 379 successfully completed the training and received certificates of completion. The impressive 127% participation rate—surpassing the initial target of 300 participants—highlights the program’s success in meeting the community’s needs.
Continued Support and Empowerment
To ensure the long-term success of the trainees, Whitefield Foundation has implemented a mentoring program that extends 90 days beyond the physical training. Participants have been organized into skill-based groups on WhatsApp, allowing for ongoing collaboration, networking, and learning. Additionally, 40 outstanding trainees received awards—20 received tool kits to help them start their businesses, and another 20 received monetary awards to support their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Looking Forward
The success of this vocational skill training program underscores the critical need for such initiatives across Nigeria. Whitefield Foundation is committed to expanding the program, with plans to reach more geopolitical zones in the country. Future editions will focus on earlier project planning, extending mentoring periods, and potentially incorporating e-learning platforms to enhance the training experience.
The All4Youth Vocational Skill Training program is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in creating opportunities for youth and combating unemployment. Whitefield Foundation is proud of the progress made and looks forward to continuing its mission of empowerment.
